Raw Material Quality

My experiments with improving raw material quality have been expensive and confusing so I was hoping somebody could shed some light on how improving raw material quality with extra daily spend works.

Is there a formula or handy way to calculate about how much quality to expect from a given amount paid?  Does the quality spend suffer from diminishing returns (harder to get highest quality)?

Thanks,

To increase quality of plant products you must increase the quality spending of your farm.
To increase the quality of natural resource you must buy or discover a natural resource of better quality.
To increase the quality of manufactured products you must have a better technology: build a research unit and start research for the product you are interested in.

Oops, I should have been more specific.  I’m trying to understand the way spending on farms works.  The general concept of “spend more money and quality goes up” is very clear, but I was hoping for a more transparent explanation with more detail.

For example, is it safe to say if you spend $100 per day on quality out of a maximum of $376 per day can you reasonably expect quality to go up ~26% (from 40 to about 51 or so)?
